Astrophysicist believe that an asteroid hurling towards the earth is in fact a possibility. It is only a matter of time, as when it strikes and not if. Although, it sounds like a scene from a Hollywood flick, serious studies are conducted by agencies like National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to prepare by reenacting the aftermath of such catastrophe and what could be done to save Earth in the first place. In the wake of such possibility the global event now known as Asteroid Day is celebrated on June 30th ; raising awareness about asteroids and protection of communities, cities, and future generation from a strike. Asteroid day was founded by over 200 astronauts, scientists, technologist and artists.
The declaration of Asteroid day was put forth having three main goals in minds:
- Exploit technologies which can help detect, track and deter near earth asteroids, which are a threat to humanity via government and philanthropic organizations.
- Accelerate the process to acquire such technology within 10 year time frame.
- Making Asteroid day a global event to raise awareness, educate and prevent asteroid hazards with United Nations recognition.
In June 2016 proposal was accepted by United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space which was later presented and approved in United Nations General Assembly’s 71st session in December 2016 declaring June 30 as International Asteroid Day. This year’s Asteroid Day will be broadcasted live and will be the first ever global 24-hour broadcast about space.
